Latest news about Parents and Grandparents programs 2023

A review was conducted by one of the latest news report teams of the Parents and Grandparents Program since 2020. It has to offer insight into next year’s procedure, as information for the Parents and Grandparents Program 2023 is currently not available. The review provides valuable information for those who are looking to apply in the future.

The IRCC’s final PGP lottery in October 2022 yielded 155,000 potential sponsors from the pool of individuals who had submitted an expression of interest in 2020. A highly coveted invitation awaited these potential sponsors.

IRCC uses a lottery system for the Parents and Grandparent Program (PGP). Individuals who submitted an expression of interest between October and November 2020 will receive an invitation to apply.

In 2020, IRCC received 10,000 PGP applications, which increased to 30,000 in 2021 and decreased to 15,000 in 2022. An estimated 150,000 potential Parents and Grandparents Program sponsors remain from the 2020 applicant pool.

There is no official information yet on whether the PGP will continue in 2023 or not. But the 2023-2025 Immigration Levels Plan may provide some clues on the future of the program.

Uncertainty surrounds the 2023 ITAs, the completed applications for the Parents and Grandparent Program (PGP). Canada plans to admit more than 28,000 parents and grandparents each year for the next three years, according to the Immigration Levels Plan 2023-2025.

The specific targets for family immigration of parents and grandparents are as follows:

  • 2023: 28,500
  • 2024: 34,000
  • 2025: 36,000

Alternative to PGP: The Super Visa

The Parents and Grandparents Program 2023 (PGP) is a popular immigration route for family reunification but is highly contested, leading to disappointment. An alternative option is a super visa.

The Super Visa has different eligibility criteria compared to the PGP and offers several benefits:

  1. The Super Visa is available year-round, whereas the PGP has a limit when it comes to open window of roughly two weeks per year.
  2. The Super Visa allows parents and grandparents sponsored by Canadian citizens or permanent residents to visit their family in Canada for up to five years without having to apply for a new visa.
  3. The Super Visa offers several renewal options for up to seven years, with multiple entries for 10 years. See the IRCC website for information on these options.
  4. The Super Visa program allows for freedom of travel between Canada and the sponsored person’s home country. This means that if the individual’s home country requires a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) for entry to Canada, they would not need to reapply for a TRV.
  5. Admission to the Super Visa program includes a letter of approval for the sponsored person’s entry into Canada for up to two years (for persons living in countries that do not require a TRV for entry into Canada).
